Augusta Oelschig PaintingSavannah artist Augusta Oelshig, born 1918, died 2000Oil on canvas entitled "Jim Crow". Augusta Oelschig, alone among the many artists who recorded the American scene in Savannah, ventured into the realm of social commentary, and she did so with a vengeance. She was engaged to paint a mural presenting the history of Savannah at Savannah High School in 1948, and administration officials were so stunned by her images of racial violence that they rejected her proposal. Oelschig, understandably, left Savannah and spent the next eleven years in New York. "Jim Crow," continues her African American genre images, the series of which were very favorably reviewed during her voluntary exile. She returned to Savannah in 1961 and remained active both as a painter and a very vocal social activist until her retirement due to health concerns in 1976. Measurements image framed 36''H
